Men’s Leather Wallets: Why You Should Invest in a Leather Wallet

A leather wallet is a one-of-a-kind, functional accessory that no man should be without. A wallet says a lot about a man, and a leather wallet says that you have class, taste, and take care of your life. When you pull out a leather wallet it shows the people around you that you are tough, yet tasteful. Leather is classy, durable and if cared for, can last for years. You can show the care you take for all aspects of your life with a well-loved, well-used leather wallet. It is the classic men’s accessory, and it stands the waves of style and fashion by always looking as good as the day you bought it. Leather wallets protect and care for the important things in life. When you invest in a quality men’s leather wallet, you are choosing to invest in yourself.

What Kind of Leather is Normally Used for a Leather Wallet?

Leather wallets range in quality like any other product. Full-grain leather is the highest quality, most durable leather on the market. It’s made from untreated hides and retains all its unique, natural beauty. Sometimes inferior leather is treated by sanding, correcting, or modifying it in other ways. Treated leathers won’t last as long as a full-grain leather wallet will.

How Long Do Leather Wallets Generally Last?

The quality of the leather and how well you care for it determines how long a leather wallet lasts. So what are the numbers? A lower-quality leather wallet can last up to three years or so, while a full-grain leather wallet can last 10 years or longer. Here are ways to extend the life of your leather wallet, no matter the quality of the leather.

  1. Don’t sit on your leather wallet. Not only is that back for your hips and back (sitting on a wallet day in and day out can pinch your sciatic nerve, and cause joint misalignment) but it’s bad for your wallet! The pressure creates friction which stretches the leather and causes stress on the fine stitching of your wallet.
  2. Avoid getting your wallet wet. Leather is sensitive to water and can warp if it gets wet. Water whisks away leather’s protective layer of moisturizing oil. Dry leather can crack, which would destroy your wallet. If your wallet does get soaked somehow, remove its contents and let it dry hanging in a closed position away from direct light and heat. For example, don’t place it under a vent blowing hot air or use a hairdryer. Let your wallet dry for at least 12 hours, then use a leather conditioner.
  3. Keep your wallet out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Now, it’s not a vampire and won’t burst into flames at a single ray of sunlight, but as much as possible avoid leaving your wallet in the sun for a long time. The same goes with a heat source, be it your oven or your campfire. Sunlight and heat, like water, strip your well-moisturized leather wallet of its protective layer, and can eventually cause drying and cracking.
  4. Treat your wallet gently. Yes, natural wear and tear on a daily use object like a wallet is normal, but the more careful you are with your wallet, the longer it will last.
  5. Clean your wallet frequently by removing everything inside, and wiping down the outside. Next, shake the wallet upside down to dislodge dirt from the pockets. Do a deep clean on your wallet with leather soap and leather conditioner once or twice a year, but no more than once a month.

How Long Does It Take to Break In a Leather Wallet?

Your new men’s leather wallet is naturally stiff and will take a few weeks of regular use to break in. You will start to break in your new leather wallet as soon as you start adding cards, photos, and cash. If you’re having trouble getting your cards in and out of your wallet, you can speed up the process with these simple steps. Go slowly and err on the side of under stretching. Leather does have some natural recoil, but can easily be overstretched.

  1. Start by sliding 2 or 3 cards into one pocket of your wallet.
  2. Next, slide more cards in, doing it one at a time. You want about 4 or 5 cards.
  3. Now that the one pocket is full, you can either massage the leather with your hands or put it in your pocket for about 10 minutes.
  4. Your wallet pocket should be slightly looser now, making it easier to get your cards out.
